Keeping Your Cool

With the temperatures due to soar this week everyone is going to feel hot and drained mentally and physically.  Don’t let the heat and humidity make you feel fatigued.  Try to make the heat more tolerable by following some of these tips and tricks:

  1. Fill a hot water bottle with cold water and put it in the freezer. Then cool down your bed linen or rest your feet on it.

  2. If you don’t have the luxury of air conditioning put a bucket of ice in front of a fan which should blow a cool mist into the air rather than circulating hot air.

  3. If you put a cold flannel or damp bandana on your pulse points you will cool you down quickly.  Pulse points can be found in your wrists, neck, elbows, behind your knees and on your ankles.

  4. Dipping your feet in a bucket of cold water before you get into bed will reduce your temperature quickly and be very soothing.

  5. Drink plenty of cold water – 2 litres a day!

  6. Spicy food is a great way of cooling down.  Capsaicin, found in chillies, sends warning signals to the body when eaten, cooling the body.

  7. Close the curtains of windows exposed to direct sunlight,

  8. Sleep under a wet towel or sheet – especially good if you have a fan running at the same time.

  9. Eat lots of fruit and veg in smaller amounts throughout the day.  Avoid salty food and protein because they produce metabolic heat when digested and cause water loss.

  10. Keep a water mister in the fridge and mist yourself regularly.

  11. Wear light, loose coloured clothes. Dark clothes absorb more heat than light colours.

  12. Drink decaf tea and coffee because caffeine dehydrates the body!

Have a good week folks and stay safe.
